Only few steps away from the city center of Merano you can discover an unbelievable variety of plants in one of the most beautiful gardens in Italy.
Once the winter residence of the Empress Sissi of Austria, the castle of Trauttsmansdorff hosts today an extraordinary botanical garden which was named 2005 Italy’s most beautiful Garden. The gardens cover an area of twelve-hectare in the form of an amphitheater and house over 80 garden landscapes with plants from all around the world.
Experience Stations, artist pavilions and exhibitions turn the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff into an experience for all senses. Music and culinary events complete its varied offer.
The idyllic village of Rio Lagundo/Aschabach is situated on an altitude of 1342 meters and can be easily reached with a new panorama cable car. The village is an ideal starting point for wonderful hikes and bike tours on the plateau of S.Vigilio. Guests showing Südtirol GuestPass the Lagundo GuestCard or the MeranCard Lagundo Plus can travel with the cable car for free.
With its 400 castles & ruins South Tyrol is the area in Europe with the richest collection of castles. The area around Merano is particulary prominent. These architecture gems of past times can still be visited or have been renovated in order to house events, museums or guesthouses and restaurants. Close to Lagundo you will find magnificent examples of castles from the 13th century, Forst Castle and Lebensberg Castle, as well as Tyrol Castle housing the South Tyrolean Museum of History and Juval Castle housing one of the four Messner Mountain Museums.
In and around Lagundo you will come across many chapels and churches, each one with its peculiar history and traits. The parish church of Saint Josef is for example one of the most modern churches in the entire alpine area.

In spring, visit the “Rural Pleasure Promenade“, a gourmet promenade where you can taste high-quality local products. The manufacturing history of the products is interesting – production has always taken place under different climatic conditions at three altitudes. All your senses will thank you for having been on this pleasure mile.
In autumn in Algund you can experience local traditions coupled with culinary seasonal highlights: from the harvest festival to the farmers’ market to the traditional Törggele.
